In one of the most credible studies correlating overall health with sexual frequency, Queens University in Belfast monitored the mortality of over 1,000 middle aged men over the course of a decade. The study was designed to compare persons of comparable circumstances, age and health. Its findings published in 1997 in the British Medical Journal, were that men who reported the highest frequency of orgasm had a death rate of half that of the others!
Further studies have shown that regular sex improves bladder control. Every time you pass urine you use certain muscles to control the flow, these same muscles are used and exercised during sex.
The Prostrate.
Urologists believe there is a relationship between infrequency of ejaculation and cancer of the prostrate. The theory is that to produce seminal fluid the prostrate and the seminal vesicles take certain substances from the blood as zinc, citric acid, and potassium and concentrate them up to 600 times. Any carcinogens in the blood would likewise be concentrated. Better to have these concentrated carcinogens evicted than to leave then hanging around and regular sex does the job. A recent study by the British Journal of Urology International asserts that men in their twenties can reduce by a third their chance of getting prostrate cancer by having sex more than five times a week.
Heart Disease.
In a further study in 2001 researchers focused on cardiovascular health. Their findings showed that by having sex three or more times a week men reduced their risk of heart attack or stroke by half. The co-author of the study, Shah Ebrahim asserted that the relationship between the frequency of sexual intercourse and mortality is of considerable public interest.
Weight Loss and Fitness.
There is no doubt that sex if nothing else is exercise and a vigorous session can burn approximately 200 calories, equal to 15 minutes on the treadmill at a good pace. In addition the pulse rate is increased from about 70 beats per minute to 150 again similar to a strenuous workout. Muscular contractions during intercourse work the pelvis, thighs, arms, neck and thorax. Sex also boosts the production of testosterone which leads to stronger bones and muscles. So it would seem that the bed is the greatest piece of exercise equipment ever invented.
The benefits of regular sex also apply to women. Dr. George Winch an obstetrician/gynecologist agrees, as does Dr Claire Bailey of the University of Bristol who says there is no danger of women overdosing on sex. In fact she says regular sessions can not only firm a woman's tummy and buttocks but also improve her posture.
Doctors are not in anyway saying that to stay fit and healthy all that is needed is regular sex. They do stress the need for a properly controlled and regular workout program together with a healthy and nutritious diet and maintain that the biggest threat to overall health is excess fat. The answer seems to be enjoy your sex life but at the same time find a properly designed workout program and diet plan.
